Chapter 418 - 289: Death and I Love You
Chapter 418 - 289: Death and I Love You
"There are still a few controlled King Beasts. Take me to them. My power can..."
"No." Mi Yin said decisively. "Going there is tantamount to suicide."
"That person’s real targets are Ze Sheng and me. If we can’t stop this catastrophe, I’ll die anyway." An Jin’s smile was grim.
Time didn’t allow for Mi Yin’s hesitation. He glanced at the injured Ling Hong and Xi, moved them to a relatively safe place to recover, then turned back and rushed into the mist with her.
Ze Sheng was fighting that "person," and the remaining King Beasts sensed the commotion and immediately charged over.
Mi Yin deliberately used his aura to lure them away from the chaotic center. He then used his power to restrain their movements, allowing An Jin to use her power to purify the black mist controlling them.
Once they were clear-headed, the King Beasts collapsed to the ground, completely drained of strength.
They looked around in confusion. "What... what’s happening?" They had completely forgotten that the chaos around them was their own handiwork.
An Jin didn’t bother explaining the situation; there was no time. "Hurry back to your cities. Restore order among the chaotic Beastmen in your cities and surrounding tribes. Take them south, to areas that haven’t been affected, or to other safe zones."
"Sheng’an Royal City has enough food stored to feed over a million Beastmen for a year. They are distributing food and other supplies unconditionally. If you have nowhere else to go, you can take refuge in that city."
After sending those King Beasts off, there was only one left.
Qi Yuan!
Before they could find him, he had already come looking for them.
Not far away, Qi Yuan, shrouded in black mist, looked at Mi Yin. His narrow, dark eyes were somewhat empty and lifeless, yet his lips were curled into a mocking smile. "You actually betrayed me? I was the one who granted you supreme Magic Power, yet you abandoned that power and now dare to oppose me."
An Jin didn’t want to waste words on this "person." Pure white power seeped from her fingertips, intending to dispel the black mist before him.
But Qi Yuan simply raised a hand, casually batting away the ball of white light. He spoke coolly, "It’s useless. It won’t work on him."
’What?!’
’Why is my Purification Power...’
The young man smiled faintly. "So you didn’t know. I’m not controlling him. He is one of my soul fragments. He’s just returning to my main body."
"My main body is still asleep, and I’m merely borrowing his body for a while."
He then looked at An Jin again and said with a smile, "So that little trick of yours is useless against me, and it’s useless against him." The female’s shocked and pained expression brought him great pleasure. Years ago, someone else had looked at him with that same expression.
The thoughts in An Jin’s mind suddenly became crystal clear.
’No wonder the system identified "Qi Yuan" as the world-ender.’ In her few encounters with him, An Jin could feel that the young man, though surrounded by darkness, yearned for the light deep in his heart.
His unfortunate childhood had certainly made him cynical and world-weary, but his corruption was nowhere near the level of wanting to destroy the world. For a while, she had been puzzling over what factors had truly pushed Qi Yuan to decide on world destruction.
It turned out that the one who wanted to destroy the world wasn’t him, but this "main body" that had taken control of his body.
"Go, now! Find Ling Hong and Xi! I’ll hold him off!" Mi Yin shoved her behind him and immediately engaged the charging Qi Yuan.
An Jin understood that her presence would only distract him. Her power was too insignificant in the face of this catastrophe; she couldn’t be of much help.
While Mi Yin blocked the attacks for her, she quickly fled the battlefield. In a nearby cave, she found Ling Hong and Xi, who were tending to their wounds.
"It’s not safe here either. The Demonic Qi will soon spread here. We have to go!"
Ling Hong wrapped a bandage around his arm, where the wound was deep enough to show bone.
In contrast, Xi’s wound was relatively light, but because of the Merfolk’s poor self-healing ability—which was greatly diminished on land—his face was even paler.
The moment the three of them stepped out of the cave, they found themselves surrounded by a large horde of Demon Beasts—all of them High Rank Demon Beasts.
If the three of them were uninjured, dealing with these High Rank Demon Beasts wouldn’t be difficult. However, they had already expended too much stamina and Energy in the previous battle.
Ling Hong immediately pushed her away, telling her to escape while he and Xi held the front line.
But she just gave a bitter smile. "It’s useless..." ’Running is useless. As long as we’re still on this continent, there’s no escaping the corrosion of the Demonic Qi.’
She, with her Purification Power, was fine for now, but An Jin noticed that Ling Hong and Xi were already beginning to be corrupted by the Demonic Qi. Their eyes were gradually turning dark and heavy. Not far away, Mi Yin wasn’t faring any better.
Suddenly, a sharp pain pierced her heart.
The spot where her mate mark was located began to burn with a scorching heat.
She abruptly looked up toward the distance, and the tears she had been holding back finally broke free, streaming down her face. "Ze Sheng..."
The sharp horn on the white fox’s forehead gathered all the power in its body, gradually forming a growing sphere of light that, like the rising sun, instantly illuminated the swirling black smoke around it.
The black-haired young man’s pupils constricted. He cursed under his breath, "Damn it," and immediately shot forward. But Mi Yin turned to block his path, tangling with him once more.
The sphere of light exploded.
The terrifying wave of Energy released in that instant swept across the entire continent.
As if day had suddenly broken, the black mist was pierced by countless rays of white light in a single moment. The howls of the Demon Beasts vanished without a trace.
The world, once filled with the smoke and fire of war, returned to peace.
The black mist, the Demon Beasts, and Qi Yuan had all disappeared.
It felt as if a very, very long time had passed, yet it also felt like only a brief moment.
After the clamor subsided.
An Jin finally climbed up from the ground. She was covered in mud and dust, her face grimy, as if she had just crawled out of the earth.
She looked around blankly at the smoke-filled, post-war world.
In the distance, the giant white fox slowly lowered its body, curling into a ball as if going into hibernation.
An Jin stumbled toward it.
"Ze Sheng..." She instinctively tried to hug him, but her hands passed through empty air. Only then did she realize the white fox before her had become translucent.
He had sacrificed his body to his power. What remained... was his Soul.
He wanted to see her one last time.
Her vision blurred, and her nose stung with a sharp ache. An Jin couldn’t stop herself from crying. "Ze Sheng, you were wrong. You were wrong back then. I didn’t abandon you. I never wanted to leave you. Not ever."
"Your mate mark is over my heart."
"I never stopped loving you..."
It was a pity the mate mark had already disappeared. He would never have the chance to see it again.
Yet, a hint of a smile appeared in the white fox’s purple eyes. It leaned forward slightly, trying to nuzzle her tear-streaked, swollen face with its nose, but in the end, it touched nothing at all.
It only said softly, "Don’t cry. I figured it out long ago. How could Wamiya not like me?"
His Soul also began to dissipate, turning into tiny specks of light that scattered in the dust-filled wind.
"Say what you just said one more time."
Tears streamed down An Jin’s face. Her voice grew more choked as she fought back sobs, forcing out the broken words, "I’ve always liked you. That’s never changed..."
"And?"
"I love you, Ze Sheng."
"I want to hear it again," he said, his voice full of longing.
"I love you."
"Again..."
"I love you. I love you."
"..." This time, no voice answered her.
An Jin opened her red, swollen eyes. The white fox before her had completely vanished, leaving her with nothing but endless smoke and wind-blown sand.
His presence and voice had been scattered without a trace.
Mi Yin and the others came up behind her. They all remained silent, waiting for who knows how long.
